AWS re:Invent - it's not about the technology

Published on 07 Jan, 2020 by Jonathan

After five invigorating days, there are two main takeaways I have from AWS re:Invent.

The first is around all those businesses that have embraced change. Change is first and foremost about people and culture, backed by process and supported by technology. It's clear these businesses have an ambitious top down vision within the company to be data driven and to do things differently. It is also worth noting that 97% of IT spend is still on premise. This suggests to us that there is a huge opportunity to help more UK businesses embrace digital transformation, bringing increases in productivity and new revenue streams at a time when the UK is taking new steps on the world stage.

The second point is around innovation and the pace of change within our industry. Innovation was clear and apparent in Andy Jassy's keynote through learning about the advances Formula 1 have made in car design for 2021, or the amazing power of HPC to transform drug development for companies like Insitro, which are bringing potential benefits to mankind worldwide. AWS innovates at a phenomenal pace and it is this desire to innovate, coupled with the supporting ecosystem of partners which enables businesses large and small to transform themselves and their industry to the benefit of their people, customers and potentially the planet.

What does this all mean for our customers? We have a strong focus on IoT and IoT is not about technology. It's about understanding how to enable a business to improve production efficiency, reduce consumable costs, or deliver new products. This starts with people, culture and processes but is enabled through IoT sensors, data lakes, machine learning and applications which tie these together to support the desired business outcomes.

Partners such as Green Custard keep pace with this rapid innovation, through events such as re:Invent. This allows us to help our current and new customers with their transformation, delivering cost efficient, secure, highly scalable IoT solutions, whilst our customers can focus on their unique value.

To summarise, in your business we recommend having a strong top down vision about how your business can change and benefit from digital transformation, support the people within your organisation to enable this change, backed by new technology. Work with partners to drive this innovation so you can continue to focus on your value, and look forward to the change in business outcomes this could deliver for you in 2020.
